The FDA warns people to be careful when buying prescription medicine online because some websites sell drugs that may be counterfeit, contaminated, expired, or not handled safely. That matters even more when the medication involved can cause heavy bleeding, strong cramping, and other serious symptoms.1 Mifepristone is also under an FDA safety program called REMS, which includes prescriber certification and patient agreement requirements.2   ### 2. The abortion pill is not just “a few pills.” It is a medical process with risks. The abortion pill typically involves two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, and misoprostol causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus. The FDA-approved regimen is for use through 70 days, or 10 weeks, of gestation.3 Possible complications can include heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, and an incomplete abortion that may require follow-up medical care.4   ### 3. don't skip an ultrasound before an abortion pill. Before making a pregnancy decision, an ultrasound can give important medical information that an online form or mailed package cannot. It can help confirm how far along the pregnancy is, whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus, and whether there may already be signs of miscarriage. That matters for health reasons and emotional reasons. An ectopic pregnancy happens outside the uterus and can be life-threatening.
