Types of Abortion
1. Medical Abortion
Medical abortion
consists of taking two different abortion drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. They work together to terminate an existing pregnancy. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, a hormone that sustains a pregnancy, and misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
2. Surgical Abortion
A
surgical abortion
is much more invasive and includes dilation of the cervix and a mix of tools and suction. Multiple surgical instruments are used to remove the pregnancy. It's a much more invasive process than medical abortion.
Understand the Risks
Each type of abortion comes with unique risks to your health. According to the
Mayo Clinic, some of the physical risks of medical abortion (the abortion pill) include:
- The body not releasing all pregnancy tissue in the uterus, also called an incomplete abortion (this may require surgical treatment)
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn't work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach
The
Mayo Clinic
also shares some of the risks of surgical abortion, including the following:
- Perforation of the uterus
- Damage to the cervix
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall
- Infection
Before an Abortion
Be fully aware of your pregnancy details before making an abortion decision to protect your health. The FDA has only approved medical abortion (the abortion pill) for women through
10 weeks of gestation. To be sure of your pregnancy details, get medical-quality pregnancy testing and an ultrasound.
